Get yours while in the US!

Are you currently in the USA and want to go again next year? Go get your job for the next summer! Now!

The job market in the USA is pretty drastic. We had applicants this spring who applied with other organizations in October (2009) and still had no job in March. So they tried to apply through us. But for the first time in 20 years, there were students who simply weren’t placed at all this year.

As far as we know, only Apex USA, Inc. still guarantees job placements, but who knows what will happen by next spring. There’s no indication that the economic situation will be vastly different in 2011. So if you are currently in the USA and enjoy spending your summer vacations there, you need to find a job for summer 2011 yourself.

FIRST-TIMERS COME FIRST
The program sponsors are not job agencies! They are cultural exchange organizations, and if there’s not enough job placements for everybody, the placements go to first-time applicants to give them the chance to visit America. You’ve already been there! But you are also expected to either have good relations with your current employer so he’ll re-hire you next year, or you are supposed to be mature enough to be able to find a job on your own.

PLACEMENTS BY THE SPONSORS
Placements by companies don’t very work well in the current job market. Employers don’t like making their hiring decisions based on a bunch of forms. They like applicants who show up at the door.

WHY IT WORKED SO FAR
With economy booming and employers needing lots of seasonal help, they had no choice but to put up with a bit of inconvenience. But now that there are no jobs and everybody wants one, the employer is king. And he won’t do what’s unappealing for him.

EXCEPTIONS
There are some. Usually big corporations. They often have a “preferred partner” and only take summer helpers from that company. For instance Yellowstone National Park. But it’s unusual.

WHAT ARE YOUR OPTIONS:

1. JOB FROM YOUR CURRENT EMPLOYER
If you are happy in the place where you are now, do your best to get a job for the next summer in the same company. Usually you get both better job and better pay than the newcomers. People who work for several summers in the same company are the happiest.

2. JOB IN THE SAME LOCATION
Still relatively easy because you have plenty of time to visit all the businesses around – every day after work. And you are not a complete stranger, you can say “I’m working at Suchandsuch Motel over at Mainstreet 6, you can ask Bill the owner about me”.

3. JOB IN A DIFFERENT LOCATION
Gives you the opportunity to work in one of your dream places next summer. Such as selling hot dogs in the Universal Studios in Hollywood. Yes it happened! Your main constraint in this case is time. You can’t spend three weeks in that place looking for a job.

HOW TO PROCEED
For 2. and 3. prepare a one-sheet US-style CV and make a ton of copies. Also get a reference from your current employer. Research the location on the internet to have some initial leads. After that, start on one end of the town and enter every business until you emerge on the opposite end of the town. Don’t be shy, even law firms need helpers in summer.

COLLECT CONTACT INFORMATION
This is absolutely essential! You are wasting your time if you don’t! Employers will tell you that they will contact you in the case they are interested. Forget it! They never will! YOU must contact them, politely yet periodically, and ask if they have any news for you.

BRING JOBS FOR FRIENDS
Many more people travels  in groups than you think. Not everybody tells us the way Leona does, but we still know of at least 3 groups this summer. Some people take a different group each year. Being together makes for a super summer. Get jobs for your friends and travel together (and you go for free as Leona did)

And before you ask, no, you are not required to use this specific form if your employer doesn’t like it. It just helps you to have to all the required information. Also, make sure that you sign it too, not just your employer! Otherwise, it’s not a contract.

    Hi,
I’m currently a Singapore Citizen and had graduated from University in year 2011. I’ve had my summer exchange in University of California, Berekely in year 2010.

Is this the right portal to enquire on the eligibility criteria to apply for a summer job?

Thanks and I look forward to your reply.

    Regards
    Shennon

Hi Shenon, you are inquiring too late. The Work and Travel USA Programs are only available for full-time tertiary (university or college) students. In other words, you must be a full-time tertiary student when you are going to the US Embassy for your visa. That’s not our decision, that’s the law, nobody else can receive the special visa for it. Please have a look at the list of available programs here: http://www.apex-foundation.org/programs/all-by-country/ and decide if there’s another one that you’d like.

Questions? Ask below :-) In English, please.
