Prepaid VISA cards on a holder in a store

Prepaid VISA cards in a store

Some of you would like to rent a car, buy a flight or bus ticket online, or use online stores such as Amazon.

But if you don’t have your own Visa, MasterCard or American Express card, your only choice is to ask somebody who has one to make the purchase for you, and give the person your money.¬†Awkward and not always possible.

What you may not know, is that in many countries, for instance in the USA, you can simply buy a pre-paid card in a store!

Important advantage, especially if you are in the country only for a short time, is that you do not need a bank account. You simply buy the card in the store and that’s it.

Another interesting feature is that many such cards allow for direct deposit of your paycheck. This means that your employer sends the money you make directly to your card, as if you had a bank account – which you don’t.

What you need to keep in mind though is that most of the cards charge monthly fees, usually around $5. But for instance American Express doesn’t charge any fees, except for withdrawing your money from an ATM (in some countries it’s called “bankomat”, or “cash-machine”), which means you are not leaking any money if you just carry the card in your pocket.

Just be careful, as with any debit card, if somebody steals your card, he stole your money! This means that you always need to keep the phone number for your card provider at hand to be able to block the card as soon as you find out you can’t find it.
