Overview

Description of Business: This is a canoe, kayak, rafting and tubing rental business who also outfit canoe camping trips. This is a great job for those who are strong and love the outdoors. Business will basically slow down at the end of August and shut down in early September. The shut down takes about one more week and then your employer will help you get day jobs in the towns near by. Some years business is still steady into September. If that is the case you will continue to work with the canoes into late September. You will have the opportunity to really improve your English. You will also get to work and meet many Americans.

Description of Area: Eagle River and Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin is an area of the Midwest known for its many lakes and beautiful natural surroundings. Here you will have many opportunities to hike, fish, swim, raft, and canoe. The Midwest also has a reputation for having the nicest people in all of the United States. You will have a great experience here.

Travel Time to the job site, example: 25 hours from New York by bus. Cost $90.00.

Job Details

Work Description: Your work will include: Building campsites, repairing canoes and other equipment, cleaning, packing and unpacking camping equipment and food, carrying out necessary preparations for camping/canoe trips, carrying kayaks, canoes and tubes and loading them into the water,taking kayaks, canoes and tubes & rafts in & out of the water, blowing up tubes, assisting customers, and driving equipment and customers to the water and back. You should be prepared to do a lot of heavy lifting.

Salary and Bonuses: $7.00, however many hours are available. If you stay for your entire work commitment you may be eligible for $250.00 bonus.

Work Hours: You will usually be working 8 hours per day; 6 days per week.

Housing

Accommodation Cost: $52.50 per week

Accommodation Description: Approximately $52.50 per week which includes utilities electricity, heat, gas,& water. This will be deducted from your pay check but again if you finis your contracted work commitment this amount will be returned to you in your last pay check. They have two locations, Eagle River, Wisconsin where you will be living in a mobile home where you will share a kitchen, bathroom and living area, and you will have two employees per bedroom. The other location is Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin. You will have fully furnished Libiny quarters with color TV with VCR. You will pay the cost of your utility use. If you are careful and do not waste utilities your employer will pay utilities. You are responsible for long distance calls. A library is about 3 miles away, Internet access is available there (as well as movies to rent). There is no drinking and smoking in your housing. You are responsible for the majority of your own meals but there will be many times when your employer will provide meals unless your second job interferes and you are unable to take part. You will be expected to keep the housing neat and clean. You will not be allowed to have overnight guests.

NOTE: Your employer has arranged for someone to pick you up at the bus station in Wakefield, Michigan. The cost of this transportation is $80.00 which will be taken out of your first two paychecks. This money will be returned to you if you stay till the end of your commitment date.

Standard requirements for the Work Travel USA program sponsored by InterExchange, Inc. are:

  • Conversational English
  • Minimum placement duration 12 weeks (or for summer, until Labor Day, whichever is longer)
  • Minimum placement is 2.5 months in national parks

Uniform/Dress Code: You must be neat and clean. You must shower daily and wash your clothes often. Your employer will provide you with two company T-shirts which you will wear to work. The cost of each shirt is $10.00, this we will deduct from your first pay check but if you finis your contracted work commitment it will be returned to you in your last pay check. Otherwise, you should dress casually and comfortably (shorts, pants, strong tennis shoes-water resistant if possible), but you should have a neat and clean appearance. You should bring (or be prepared to buy) clothes for hot weather and for cold, rainy days. Please bring swimming suits and waterproof shorts. Water shoes or any shoes where your toes are not exposed are allowed.

NOTE: You need an international drivers license and must feel comfortable driving. We will provide a Wisconsin Drivers Education booklet. Try to get an international drivers license before you arrive in the USA.
