How it works

Visa Types
what Visa you can apply for

Visitor’s Permit
If you are going to participate in an Internship only, you will apply for a Visitor’s Permit with an endorsement “to do unpaid practical training/volunteering”. You receive a Letter of Acceptance from the host company. You will be applying at the South African Embassy in your home country.

Study Permit
If you would like to combine an Internship with a language course, you will apply a for a Study Permit with an endorsement for both programmes, i.e. from the language school and from the host company.  You will be applying at the South African Embassy in your home country.

Visa extension
You may extend your Visitor’s Permit while you are in South Africa. However the application can be rejected and no reason needs to be given. Therefore it is recommended that the visa received upon entry is for the full period of stay.

Arrival in South Africa
What comes after your arrival?

After a successful Visa application you will travel to South Africa. It is recommended to arrive about 4 days before the first day of your internship. This gives you sufficient time to adapt to the new environment and to meet up with the internship officer to clarify any final questions.

A meeting at the local company or organization will be scheduled before the first day of work and you will be accompanied there to be introduced to company and colleagues.

During the Internship the placement officer stays in touch with you to ensure that the experience is as beneficial as possible.
